History of the Liberty Head Half Eagle

Christian Gobrecht's Liberty half eagle holds a unique distinction: it is the only U.S. coin struck at all seven historic mints, including the short-lived Southern gold mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega. Its seventy-year run, 1839-1908, is the longest of any U.S. gold design.

Charlotte and Dahlonega issues, struck from locally mined Appalachian gold until the Civil War closed both mints in 1861, are intensely collected for their history as much as their rarity. Carson City half eagles of the 1870s add a Western chapter.

Common Philadelphia and San Francisco dates of the 1880s-1900s survive in quantity and track the gold price, making them an accessible entry into pre-1933 gold.
