History of the Barber Quarter

The Barber quarter shared Charles Barber's Liberty head with the dime and half dollar, circulating from 1892 to 1916. Quarters did the economy's heavy lifting, and most survivors are worn to the rims.

The series is defined by its three San Francisco keys: the 1896-S, the 1913-S, at 40,000 pieces the lowest-mintage regular U.S. quarter of the twentieth century, and above all the 1901-S, rarer still in collectable grades and a five-figure coin even worn.

Because so few escaped circulation, original Mint State Barber quarters of any date are far scarcer than their Morgan dollar contemporaries, a fact the market increasingly recognizes.
