History of the Seated Liberty Dime

Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design, Liberty resting on a rock with pole and shield, borrowed from Britannia, dominated American silver coinage for half a century. The dime version ran from 1837 to 1891 through five major subtypes, as arrows, legends, and weight standards changed around it.

Carson City dimes of 1871-1874 are storied rarities, led by the unique-in-grade 1873-CC no-arrows. New Orleans issues of the 1840s-50s and the low-mintage 1860s Philadelphia dates give the series uncommon depth.

Most surviving Seated dimes are well worn, and originality matters enormously: untampered surfaces with even grey toning bring strong premiums over cleaned coins.
