History of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
Commissioned personally by Theodore Roosevelt to give American coinage the grandeur of ancient Greece, Augustus Saint-Gaudens' double eagle is routinely called the most beautiful coin the United States ever struck. The sculptor died months before its 1907 release; the ultra-high-relief experimental strikes of that year are among the most coveted of all American coins.
The series ended with the gold recall of 1933, when nearly the entire final mintage was melted, the handful of surviving 1933 double eagles include the only U.S. coin ever to sell for over $18 million.
Common dates like the 1924 survive by the hundred thousand from European hoards and track the gold price closely, making the Saint the standard vehicle for owning pre-1933 U.S. gold.
