History of the Washington Quarter (Silver)
Struck for the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, John Flanagan's quarter was meant as a one-year commemorative, but it replaced the Standing Liberty design permanently in 1932 and, in clad form, remains in pockets today. Phase one for collectors is the silver era, 1932-1964.
The two branch-mint first-year issues, 1932-D and 1932-S, each with mintages in the 400,000s, are the series keys; everything after 1940 is common in circulated grades and tracks silver melt closely.
Its very availability makes the silver Washington a favorite entry point: a date run from 1941 is achievable on a modest budget, while early Denver issues in true Mint State remain condition rarities.
